Grunge is much slower and more distorted than punk, though, showing the musical influence of heavy metal bands like Black Sabbath, though grunge groups for the most part disavowed the beliefs and behavior of metal bands.

Important early influences on the grunge scene in the s included groups from the local hardcore and punk rock scenes that were developing the grunge style, as well as alternative bands from the northeastern United States. Sonic Youth and the Pixies were two bands from the Northeast that were incalculably important to the grunge scene.

Sonic Youth in particular was highly supportive of the Seattle scene. The Melvins were a Seattle band that slowed down hardcore music to make the heavy sound that would characterize grunge, and they served as mentors to many of the grunge groups that would later make it big.

Frontman Kurt Cobain was deemed the tortured voice of a generation, a label that tortured him even more. One of the most famous and controversial examples of this is Pearl Jam. A look at the etymology of grunge. At one point, the term became so convoluted that the grunge label was used to describe bands like Candlebox, Stone Temple Pilots, Bush and Silverchair, bands that had little or nothing to do with the northwest music scene and bands the progenitors of grunge hated to be associated with.

Epp and the Calculations! Pure grunge! Pure noise! Pure shit! Much of this had to do with similar production and promotion. Even Nirvana, now liberated from the more restrictive sound requirements of Sub Pop, wanted to go into a poppier direction. The 80s version of grunge, with long-haired musicians wailing away in front of tiny crowds at squalid clubs like the Central Tavern or Squid Row, was dead.
