By Kristen Seymour March 31, Sally Anne Thompson, Animal Photography. Some weigh hundreds of pounds and others that weigh less than five. Some are nearly three feet tall at the shoulder, while others are only 6 inches tall.
They are Brown, black, white, gray, and any color in between. Then there are the tails; long tails, short tails, skinny tails, fluffy tails and curly tails. What is the deal with those curly tails? Even among curly tails there is some variety. Like other Northern breeds, they have plush coats and curly tails. Shiba Inu are small hunting dogs from Japan. They come from a spitz origin, which gives them their thick coats and curly tails. They are an independent breed and are often described as cat-like by their owners.
Like the Basenji, Shiba Inu is considered an ancient breed, with a genetic history that predates most of our modern dogs. The Norwegian Buhund is truly an all-purpose dog. The breed has been used as a farm and herding dog, a watch dog, and a nanny dog.
Samoyeds are known for their beautiful white coats and curly tails. These northern dogs have been used as reindeer herders and sledding dogs for hundreds of years. Samoyeds are another ancient breed, like most of the spitz-type dogs, and have a long history working alongside humans in incredibly harsh weather.
Pomeranians are small, sturdy, and lively dogs. These tiny dogs were bred down from larger working dogs to be family companions. Although paintings from the s depict dogs weighing as much as 30 pounds, a single pound Pomeranian shown by Queen Victoria is credited with popularizing the toy-sized dogs.
The Akita is a large Japanese breed widely known for its fierce loyalty to its family. Originally bred for hunting large game such as bear and elk, the Akita is also a dedicated guardian. Another ancient breed, the Chow Chow has been a part of Chinese culture for hundreds of years. These fluffy , curly-tailed dogs are unique and primitive. The affectionate, mild-mannered keeshond has one of the richest coats and one of the most tightly curled tails in the animal kingdom. A keeshond's tail is so tight against its body and draped in such luxuriant fur that from some angles it seems to have no tail at all.
The squat, sturdy, fluffy chow chow is known for its cat-like personality and stocky build. It also has a curled tail that sits tight against its back, due to the fact that the chow chow is an arctic dog built to withstand cold weather. Chow chows often are compared to cats for their sense of independence and general ability to be unimpressed by their owners.
Related and similar in appearance, the akita and shiba inu are Japanese dogs known for their extreme loyalty and affection. The akita is larger and can, if poorly trained, be aggressive, but both breeds display strong, thick tails that connect their rumps to their backs in what looks like a jug handle.
