Granted, the creators for this game were a different team with a different vision, although gameplay mechanics remained very much the same. Although the game feels repetitive and the scares aren't that fantastic, the atmosphere and the twisted storyline that leaves some aspects up for interpretation compensate for it. As the camera batteries die, the player is left defenseless to figure out their survival in complete darkness while manic half beasts chase after them with various torture weapons.
It would be difficult to describe a game like The Forest with just one word, simply because there's so much more to this game than one expects at first glance. It's a survival horror game, yes, which drops the player on to unknown land where they must find their missing son. That being said, it's also about building and thriving in nature, while dealing with the local native tribes. With mods , the game expands even more.
How the game feels and is played depends totally on the player themselves, who can set the pace as they wish. Still, no one can deny the creepiness of being alone in the forest, in the dark, while the locals stare from the bushes.
If forests seem like the scariest feature, why not try the Blair Witch? Inspired by the cult classic The Blair Witch Project movie that revolutionized the found footage horror genre, the game seeks to bring a similar vibe to the player in a much more interactive way. The game itself historically takes place two years after the events of the movie, and centers around the search for a missing boy. Assisted by his dog Bullet, the main character, a seasoned former police officer, will need to piece together a bunch clues gathered from a highly atmospheric and surprisingly non-linear open-world environment.
Before Amnesia , there was Penumbra , and boy was Penumbra as a series something else. It's definitely a retro horror game by now, but for older players who were around at the time and who can appreciate an oldie but goodie will absolutely fall in love with the look and feel of this franchise.
Chases are just hideous , the monsters faster than you as you race for a door to slow them, or a dark room to hide in. My leg muscles tightening in absolute fear as I almost touch my nose against the monitor trying to reach safety, before that awful, brutal slashing sound brings me down to my knees, now hopelessly crawling as its claws or blade comes crashing down to finish me off.
The only real shame is its idiotic dazzle-to-white every time Daniel has one of his "memories". You're playing in the dark, staring at a very dark screen, and then without warning it routinely attempts to blind you. That I have sinusitis right now very likely makes me more sensitive to it than usual, but still, it's a crappy move, frequently making me shout as I swerve my head away from the screen to avoid the back of my retinas bursting into flames.
More than anything, it breaks the mood, and the mood is Amnesia's greatest weapon. Frankly, it's too scary. I've only so much energy to devote to being absolutely bloody terrified, and the real world takes up most of it.
Why am I scared?! I know nothing's actually going to get me, I know that if I get killed in the game, not only do I go on living in real life, but the game then lets me try again! I've not even gone near the game's newer Hard Mode. So why am I just so worked up as I try to escape, so tense, so bristling with panic?
I should be able to rise above this! I'm a strong person! Yeah but no, it just worms its way into my nervous system, a combination of its cacophony of horrific noises, the closing darkness, the twisting vision, increasing heartbeats, panicked utterances, and then that unearthy horror-moaning getting louder behind you I kind of love it. And then I feel just utterly exhausted. This ran out of the "box" for me, straight into glorious x widescreen with nary a complaint.
For a nine year old game, that's magnificent. No worries at all with this one, with Frictional working on it as recently as a year ago. If you like being flipping terrified. And not just for the thrills, but also the super-smart use of physics, in a way that that'll have you shouting at the sky in fury that all games don't do this.

This kind of sanity loss mechanic has been utilized very well in recent horror games like Phasmophobia , and it works just as well in the latest Amnesia game.
It also adds plenty of psychological terror to a game that's already pretty terrifying. The psychological horror that pervades Amnesia: Rebirth isn't the only reason the game is so scary.
